Nancy Basinski

At the heart of Nancy Basinski’s art lies what can only be described as her utter enchantment with the world around her. Growing up in Michigan, she was treated to ever-changing landscapes, from the brilliant greens of spring to winter’s icy blues and grey. She describes spending her youth, “exploring the woods, walking through horse pastures, and crossing babbling brooks while balancing on stepping stones.” Given the nature of her work, it’s not surprising that all of her memories are tied to place, to the “magical” spaces she inhabited.

“I loved walking the lighthouse piers, and basking in the sun on the beaches,” she says of her summers on Lake Michigan. She continues, “I’ve seen giant sunflowers growing in Minnesota, the prairie grass and wheat fields glowing green-gold in Kansas. I’ve been fortunate to travel to so many beautiful locations- from the Golden Gate Bridge, to the Rio Grande, to Glacier National Park, to Siesta Key, Florida. These are the places that have shaped me, and that forever live in my heart and my imagination.” And they live on her canvas, too. Basinski’s art blends her love of impressionism and expressionism with a gorgeous sense of color, and innate sensitivity to mood, to create rich, romantic scenes that resonate with sentiment.  Her paintings beckon the viewer forward, inviting them to bask in the beautiful worlds she creates, as lush with emotion as they are with color.
