Mulitmedia Artist

Jennifer Nelson

Jennifer Nelson is a fiber artist and painter. Her fiber pieces consist of natural yarns, typically wool and cotton, on a ground cloth of cotton or linen. Her fiber work is primarily rug punch or rug hooking. Jennifer feels connected to a long line of American fiber artists who have worked in these mediums and techniques since colonial times.  However, her compositions are mostly abstract, geometric and linear forms. She is influenced by the Art Deco, Bauhaus and Brutalist movements. Jennifer finds the balance between positive and negative space in these forms to be a compelling place to explore.   Her paintings of acrylic and eggshell inlay explore similar forms and compositions. These paintings are often the original inspiration for her fiber pieces.

"I come from the world of interior design where balance, juxtaposition and composition are necessary studies. My personal design aesthetic has always been art based and has led me to start creating art myself. As a fiber artist, my preferred medium is hand rug punching wool and cotton fibers on linen ground cloth. My preference is to work in natural fibers with sustainable tools. This slow to emerge, methodic art form connects me to a rich history of fiber artist who have come before me. As a painter, I work in acrylic, sometimes with the addition of eggshell. The eggshell, like my fiber work, is a methodic, detailed process much like piecing together an intricate puzzle."
